No matter how much you train the wolf, he still looks at the mountains and howls -
Kazakh Proverb

A drawing for charcoalfeather 's :iconcharcoalfeather: OC contest for his works on Basmachi, a wonderful tale of a young Kyrgyz male in the wake of the Basmachi Revolution that took place in central asia between 1916–1942, by the muslim turkic people against Imperial Russia and the Soviet Rule. Though, the setting of the story itself is set in 1920s.

In this drawing, I tried to bring out the contrast between the two character, Chingiz (right) the main protagonist, and Nurana (Left) supposedly to be the story's heroine (thought only briefly mentioned at the moment). Chingiz was a young western-educated man who joined the Basmachi movement in bringing freedom to his land and her people an, while Nurana, is a young lady who came from a family of Jadids, a Muslim Modernist Movement that sought to put an end to the elitist and conservative muslim tradition in central Asia.

For chingiz, his portrayal is an attempt at mimicking the author's style, and opted for a much more simplified portrayal with taditional Kazakh inspired dress and turkic turban. This reflects my view on how Chingiz, whose ideals from his western style education, would brought conflict to his ideals , which is beautifully explored and narrated in the later stage of the stories (No, I won't spoil it, you better read it, NOW :D). As for Nurana, she is portrayed in a traditional, kazakh inspired dress, richly decorated and adorned to reflect her standing in the bourgeoisie society (as described, and also because many Jadidists came from the upper class and the well-educated member of the society).

Both represents "The Two Homes", in which Nurana represents the beauty of Chingiz's homeland, while Chingiz himself represents the a much determined image of his homeland.
