Description
I have met a few finnish people here in my city, from colleagues to friend's acquitance, but so far, only one has made a rather interesting impression about Finland , thanks to my encounter with Päivä (Not sure how to pronounce that).
To my surprise, there's actually quite a lot of jokes that are attributed to the Finns, some of which, are well known by Europeans to the point of stereotyping. It's somewhat interesting to know that most of the jokes involves the Finn's tolerance with cold, generally relaxed attitude and alcoholic drink
One interesting anecdote was the famous Molotov's cocktail, whose humor revolves around it's name. When the USSR invaded Finland in winter war, In 1939 the Soviet Foreign Minister, Vyacheslav Molotov, claimed the Soviet Union was not dropping bombs on Finland, but merely airlifting food to starving Finns. The Finns, who were not starving, ironically dubbed the Russian cluster bomb "Molotov's bread basket". So in a humorous but practical reply, the Finns developed an improvised incendiary device that they used to counter Soviet tanks, calling them "Molotov's Cocktail" as "a drink to go with the food aka Molotov's Bread Basket".
I had the fortune to share many jokes with the newly met finnish lady and thought that it's be nice to draw her, in a heavily stylized folk costume! Jokes aside though, Finland is one of the most developed nation in the world who enjoyed a highly advanced educational system and employed one of world's most comprehensive social welfare system for its people!
