Description

Persian-Massagetaean War - Persian empire conquest under Cyrus the Great, ca. 6th BCE

A Concept drawing for Queen Tomyris or Tahm-Rayiš in Eastern Iranian language for
the Historical Women War Queens Series that aims to portray many Historical Women Warriors ever recorded in the history of men. She is the queen of a pastoral-nomadic confederation Massagetae in 6th BE, related to the Schytians, a group of Iranian nomads. It was chronicled by Herodotus that she defended her realmn when the Persian Empire invaded Messagetaean territoy, resulting in Persia's defeat and the death of its Emperor, Cyrus the Great. Though her actual existence which includes her killing Cyrus the great is still a matter of debate, her legend is rather impressive, giving her a rather legendary image of an Amazon Warrior Woman.

DRAWING COMMENTARIES

The drawing of Queen Tomris is perhaps an overdue one; believe it or not, since I started this page last July, I have received no less than 20 messages suggesting that I should depict her =P! As such, I'd like to show my own interpretation of Her, using the skills I have learned from drawing women warriors all these years, especially since my page has recently reached the 2000+ likes :D

There's no descriptive account of what Tomyris looked like, let alone any solid evidence about her existence, which makes drawing her somewhat of a challenge. Historically speaking however, the Messagetai was related to the Scyhtians, whom the later is called Saka by the Persian Empire. As such, much of the artefacts unearthed from the scythian graves could be found which allows both historian and archeologist, along with many other to imagine what they looked like. :)

Basically, in this drawing, Queen tomyris is drawn with highly stylized schythian noble outfit based on the findings at Ordzhonikidze, which includes the expensive geometric shaped clothing decorations typically found in Scythian art. Her sword and quiver are bosth based on archeological findings (with a bit of personalization). On the other hand, her bodyguard nehind here on the left, is depicted as a heavily armored lancer, a position reserved for the msot elite of the nomadic warriors. Also, for artistic license, I have included a wounded kneeling Persian guardsman, based on the Achaemenid era relief of Darius at Behistun.

As mentioned, the drawing here is purely speculation and may or may not be historically accurate at all. :)
