Description

A concept drawing for the Eastern German Woman Warrior in the Historically Wrong Sketch Series - Medieval Revisited, which is roughly based on the Middle ages covering 800 AD to 1400 AD. She represents the Eastern Marches of the Holy Roman Empire which borders with the Slavic people of the East, the notable one being Meissen and Saxony.

Inspired by the music: Dragonland by Thomas Bergersen

INTRODUCTION

It could be said that the Holy Roman Empire in it's great extend during the middle ages, the Empire of the various Germanic people that lived in central Europe. Such statement however, could be considered as simplistic and very generalized, as in reality, the Holy Roman Empire consisted various territories which incorporated different cultures that was considered as "non-germanic". This was true in the eastern part of the Empire's border where various western Slavic tribes had established their settlements, out of which, many would later be incorporated into the Kaiser's realm. Conflicts would also arose between the German Settlers and the Slavic inhabitant, which made the area constantly shifting the Empire's Eastern border. Nevertheless, due to the importance of the region, the Eastern part of Holy Roman Empire became the home to some of Imperial's most influential electors, like that of Saxony.

DRAWING COMMENTARIES

I'm just so glad after nearly a month on not producing any drawing in February, I could finally make something to the historically wrong sketch series. Indeed, I have to admit it was a very busy month, but I also managed to sip in some time to study some of the great historical drawing artists, like Angus McBride and Graham Turner. Of course, many of you would already know by now that Angus McBride is my patron artist and I really look up to his style of drawings, which has inspired me a lot with the Historically Wrong Sketch Series. There's just something about each of these artist that made their drawing uniquely theirs, in a way that whenever people sees it, it can captivate its viewer.

So, I wanted to see if I can try to emulate that, in my own words, "Angus McBride" factor. It's something that I've always try to do for every drawing, from giving a much more attention to the details of atmosphere that brings more from the drawing, as well as how the main subject (the woman warrior) as well as others included in the drawing interact with the overall scene. Hence, this is what i decided to depict Reichsfrau Oda von Meissen, wife to one of the Barons in the series Imperial Eastern Marches. I chose to try a new different scene, not of combat with generic pose or just general interactions, but rather, something that is aimed to draws the audience attention not only to her, but to other characters and eventually, the overall scene!:D

In this drawing, She is depicted wearing a Coat of Plates and a Bascinet with mail aventail. I've seen how some drawings of the European knights in the 14th century depicting the guard-chain attached from the chest, so i decided to include this one as well. She is also wearing a mail Hauberk underneath her coat of plates, as well as fabric lined with iron splints underneath, to protect her arm (Arm braces?). On the other hand, her retainer who is holding a crossbow is depicted in a much more outdated style, with late 13th century kettle helmet with mail aventail, as well as mail shirt with hauberk. Unfortunately, the crossbow is badly drawn and so is the forest.

The scene depicts her and her retainers trying to sneak and attack a small contingent of her enemies, depicted in mixed Baltic, Polish and Eastern Slavic attires. The fallen castle tower in the background (probably her husband's) is inspired by the Teutonic Castle in Swicie, Poland.

Man, Reischfrau looks amazing. I like how she is in battle taking shelter on the trees with her soldiers.
