Description

A concept drawing of a Carthaginian (Liby-Phoenician) Women Warrior for the Historically Wrong Sketch Series - Project Antiquity which aims to portray Women Warriors of various cultures in a fictitious anachronistic historical settings based on the Classical Antiquity Era of Warfare. Qarta-Hadasti is a corruption of the Phoenician word for Carthage or ancient Carthage, one of the powerful civilization that contested the rule of Mediterranean against the Roman Republic before their destruction in 146 BCE.

Inspired by the Music: Hunt or be Hunted of The Witcher III: Sword of Destiny (Thanks to my friend for recommendation)

Since I've been drawing so much on the Medieval series, I thought maybe i could try and depict something much further back to the classical antiquity. After much reading for Rome History, thanks to the help of Pelycosaur24 :iconpelycosaur24:, the History of Carthage caught my attention and it inspired me to create this drawing.

Now, depicting armor in this era is much more challenging for me because this era is not really something which i have dealt nor studied in details. Although, Women Warriors and Amazons are more commonly chronicled in this time than the later era, I still try to maintain my conservatism in regards to depicting armor (in)accurately (and anachronistically). On the other hand, the importance of Armors in ancient culture is somewhat less important than that of the later era, so anything from bare-naked warriors to what we considered as impractical armors did exists, for in both case, the shock and terror value is given more emphasize than protection. But in anycase, should you find any error of have recommendations, please by all means, let me know and I will try my best to fix it.

As for the character itself, She is Muttunbaal of Thapsus, depicted as a Carthaginian Heavy Infantry with stylized Hellenistic arms and armors. Her Armor is based on Greek Linothorax (though in this case, with bronze scale), and her shield and sword are based on Greek Hoplon and Xiphos respectively. As for the Helmet, it's based on the Thracian design, although i've included Horsehair as stylization. All of this are based on the Hellenistic equipments and tactics which were adopted in 4th-3rd Century BCE by Carthage, though the equipments here are mostly worn by the wealthy citizens. In reality, the equipments of Carthage Army would be immensely diverse, since its army relied heavily on mercenaries and conscripts from allies/conquered region, which includes Nubian, Iberian as well as Greeks.

Muttunbaal itself would have been a wealthy citizen of Thapsus, and this depiction could be of the defense of her hometown from an invading foreign force. Either she fought on her own will, or took up the position after her father's/husband's/brother's death, that is up to our imagination. :)

Detailed History will be expanded and updated soon :D
