Description
A concept re-drawing for the Central German Woman Warrior or a Female Landschneckt in the Historically Wrong Sketch Series - Medieval Revisited, which is roughly based on the Middle ages covering 800s AD to 1400s AD. She represents the Landschneckt of the Holy Roman Empire, although, given the timeline, her representation very very anachronistic. Ilsa is one of the sister from the original drawing:Ilsa and Ilda von Harzberg - Sword Sisters Concept
Inspired by the music - The Stage is Set Drum & Steel Remix by Andreas Waldetoft (EUIV Ost)
This is an updated clearer scan of last year's drawing***
Now, As you may have noticed, while her sister is drawn in Gothic style plate armor, I chose to portray Ilsa as a Landschneckt, dressed in their extravagant slash and puff clothing complete with feathery hats and a zweihander Perhaps this would be one of the most anachronistic and historically inaccurate, as anything which relates to her attires existed beyond 1400s. The Landschneckt themselves were formed in the late 15th century, to rival that of the (in)famous swiss mercenaries, renowned for their combat skills and discipline. By this time, Europe was a land rich in war, and veterans from the previous conflict such as the hundred years war, formed themselves into mercenaries who sell their expertise in ending people's live to anyone with the funds and the guts for a quick, brutal war.
Now, coming back to the von Harzberg sisters, even if they are petty nobles with no land, having their status as mercenaries under the Empire means that they would live a brutal life of warfare. Forget Joanne of Arc or other characters that I have portrayed in this series up until now, these sisters are unlike the maidens or warrior princess that resides in their palace surrounded by wealth. These two are used to the bottom rung of the society, turning killing into business, and earning their wealth from the death of others. For example, Ilda's gothic plate armor could be earned from sacking a small town or killing maybe 50 - 80 peasants/townsfolk, or capturing few nobles alive and used it as a ransom. The figure may not be that accurate, but you get the idea of how much blood involved just to get a nice suit of armor.
So, why do we glorify people that butcher others like there's no tomorrow? the reason is very simple: You do not become a hero by dying for your cause, you become a hero by making sure that others die for theirs.
In this drawing, Ilsa is drawn with the very stylized armor inspired by the Landschneckt, and her (poorly) drawn zweihander is a modified version because i messed up the design somewhere along the way . Compared to her sister Freiin Ilda Engeltraud von Harzberg of Kaiserreich whose only concern is victory through might and terror, Ilsa is a hot-headed fiery woman whose thirst of battle can only be filled with the good old clash of steel and bravado. The two makes a nice pair of mercenaries for the empire, before finally crafting their own separate realms.

INTRODUCTION
Warfare is no strange business for the German people in the middle ages and given the volatile nature of the Holy Roman Empire, war was essentially a part of people's life. As such, whenever there's conflict within and abroad, there's always the need for mercenaries which provided opportunities and profit to be made for those with enough gut. One of the famous mercenaries to have come out from the middle ages was the Landschneck, originally formed in the end of 15th century by the Holy Roman Empire Maximilian I, these well armed professional mercenaries would later dominate the landscape of16th century European Warfare.
